Identification-robust inference for endogeneity parameters in linear structural models

چکیده
We provide a generalization of the Anderson-Rubin (AR) procedure for inference on parameters which represent the dependence between possibly endogenous explanatory variables and disturbances in a linear structural equation (endogeneity parameters). We focus on second-order dependence and stress the distinction between regression and covariance endogeneity parameters. Such parameters have intrinsic interest (because they measure the effect of "common factors" which induce simultaneity) and play a central role in selecting an estimation method (because they determine "simultaneity biases" associated with least-squares methods). We observe that endogeneity parameters may not identifiable and we give the relevant identification conditions. We develop identification-robust finite-sample tests for joint hypotheses involving structural and regression endogeneity parameters, as well as marginal hypotheses on regression endogeneity parameters. For Gaussian errors, we provide tests and confidence sets based on standard-type Fisher critical values. For a wide class of parametric non-Gaussian errors (possibly heavy-tailed), we also show that exact Monte Carlo procedures can be applied using the statistics considered. As a special case, this result also holds for usual AR-type tests on structural coefficients. For covariance endogeneity parameters, we supply an asymptotic (identificationrobust) distributional theory. Tests for partial exogeneity hypotheses (for individual potentially endogenous explanatory variables) are covered as instances of the class of proposed procedures. The proposed procedures are applied to two empirical examples: the relation between trade and economic growth, and the widely studied problem of returns to education.

Robust inference in nonlinear models with mixed identification strength
The paper studies inference in regression models composed of nonlinear functions with unknown transformation parameters and loading coefficients that measure the importance of each component. In these models, non-identification and weak identification present in multiple parts of the parameter space, resulting in mixed identification strength for different unknown parameters. This paper propose...

This paper determines the properties of standard generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators, tests, and confidence sets (CSs) in moment condition models in which some parameters are unidentified or weakly identified in part of the parameter space. The asymptotic distributions of GMM estimators are established under a full range of drifting sequences of true parameters and distributions. The...

) Regression-based heteroskedasticity and serial correlation robust standard errors and specification tests are proposed for linear models that may not represent an expectation conditional on all past information. The statistics are computable via a sequence of linear regressions, and the procedures apply to models estimated by ordinary least squares or two stage least squares. Examples of the ...

This paper reviews recent advances in estimation and inference for nonparametric and semiparametric models with endogeneity. It first describes methods of sieves and penalization for estimating unknown functions identified via conditional moment restrictions. Examples include nonparametric instrumental variables regression (NPIV), nonparametric quantile IV regression and many more semi-nonparam...
متن کاملWeak identification and confidence sets for covariances between errors and endogenous regressors: finite-sample and asymptotic theory∗
In this paper, we focus on structural models and propose a finite-and large-sample projection-based techniques for building confidence sets for the endogeneity parameter between errors and regressors allowing for the presence of weak identification. First, we show that our procedure is robust to weak identification and provide analytic forms of the confidence sets for endogeneity parameter. Sec...
